Ten years later, despite Elinor's intention of having the sixteen-year-old Merida become a proper, royal, ladylike princess, Merida is determined to seek freedom and live her own life. The story cuts to around ten years later when the film learns that Fergus lost his left leg during the battle with Mor'du and has vowed to find Mor'du again and avenge his leg. Elinor and Merida flee, while Fergus and his men stay behind to battle the bear. After retrieving an arrow accidentally fired into the woods, where Merida sees some Will O' the Wisps, small blue fairies that are said to lead you to your fate, Merida's family is attacked by an ancient bear, Mor'du. On Merida's sixth birthday, King Fergus gives Merida a short bow and arrow as a birthday present. Princess Merida is an incredibly skilled archer living in the Scottish kingdom of DunBroch with her mother Queen Elinor, and her father King Fergus. The movie takes place in 10th century Scotland. It is dedicated to Steve Jobs who passed away on October 5, 2011. Preceding the film is a short film entitled La Luna, directed by Enrico Casarosa. The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film up against other Disney animated films, such as Wreck-It Ralph and Frankenweenie.
